Temporomandibular joint disorders impact the jaw joint, tendons and muscles, causing pain and discomfort. These disorders are referred to as TMJ or TMD, and are known for creating jaw or facial pain. TMJ is often caused by stress on the jaw joint from teeth grinding, jaw clenching or tooth misalignment. Our dental experts at SmileBuilders, Inc. offer TMJ/TMD treatment at our offices in Canton, Batesville, Byram, and Lucedale, MS.
Temporomandibular joint disorders, or TMD, result from pressure and strain on the jaw joint. This can be caused by excessive stress from teeth grinding, or bruxism. One TMD or TMJ treatment that can be effective is using a customized dental nightguard. By preventing nocturnal teeth grinding or jaw clenching, pressure on the jaw joint and tissues is lessened. The nightguard can also adjust the position of the jaw to relieve strain, even in patients who do not clench their jaw or have bruxism.
Another possible cause of TMJ/TMD is a dental misalignment. This can be due to malocclusions in the teeth or a bite that puts stress on the jaw joint. Missing teeth or irregularly shaped teeth can also impact the jaw. Fixing dental or orthodontic problems and replacing missing teeth can offer relief from TMD.
